The opposites

As part of a university assignment, I was challenged to merge two worn and torn materials with opposite textures to create a brand-new garment. I found a distressed denim dress missing buttons and frayed at the edges and a velvet dress that had lost its structure but still carried a rich, tactile elegance. Rather than discard them, I saw potential in their contrast. I dismantled both and reimagined them as a single skirt, combining the rugged strength of denim with the softness and sheen of velvet. This transformation was more than an exercise in construction it was a statement. In a fashion industry overwhelmed by waste, reworking discarded garments into something desirable and new is essential. This skirt represents that mindset: physical proof that waste isn’t the end of a material’s life. Through thoughtful design, it becomes the beginning of something more unique, more personal, and more sustainable.
